Tea Lane Architects

ABOUT

Tea Lane Architects was established by brothers Dain & David McMillan, who have over 15 years' experience working on a range of projects in Ireland and abroad. David is a registered member of the RIAI and Dain is a registered architect with the ARBV (Victoria, Australia).

We provide architectural and project management services, with a focus on high-quality modern design with timeless interiors. We put a strong emphasis on the inventive use of building materials, the quality of light and the relationship between the building and its surroundings. We ensure that each project is an original and elegant interpretation of the site, brief and budget.

We enjoy designing a broad range of projects, from cafés and bars, to schools, offices, community buildings, group housing and one-off architectural homes. We do not specialise in one particular building type, instead, we consider our specialism to be high-quality architecture.

Feel free to get in touch to discuss your project.

OUR NAME

Church Road in Celbridge, where we are based, is known locally as Tea Lane (or Tae Lane). The story goes that workers from Yorkshire were brought to Celbridge to work in the local mill in the 1800's. They lived in cottages along Church Road and on their short walk to the mill they would discard their used tea leaves onto the road. Hence the road became known as Tea Lane.

Dain undertook a study of Celbridge Town as part of his Architectural Design Thesis in 2008. This culminated in a design proposal along the River Liffey bank, next to the old mill, for a new civic centre and market place which would connect to Castletown House via a river walkway. Tea Lane Architects is now based just 100m from that site, on none other than Tea Lane.

At the top of Tea Lane is Tea Lane Graveyard, a hidden historic gem. It's generally open to the public despite its enclosed appearance. If you are in the vicinity, it is worth taking the opportunity to see one of Celbridge's finest pieces of architectural history, which has recently been restored.
