Ringwood Cottage, Kildare

Project Type Residential

Ringwood Cottage fell into disrepair and was unoccupied for a number of years. The brief was to transform the existing structure into a contemporary family home that would maximise natural light and establish a strong connection with the surrounding landscape by opening up towards the garden and expansive farmland beyond.

The design approach sought to preserve the modest character of the original cottage while creating a clear architectural distinction between old and new. To the rear, a striking charred timber extension provides a contemporary counterpoint to the retained cottage, expressing the evolution of the building in a simple and honest manner.

The elongated site, together with the neighbouring cottage’s long extension next to the boundary, presented a particular challenge in bringing daylight deep into the plan. This was resolved by introducting a linear service zone and adjoining lightwell along the boundary. This strategy neatly accommodates the central circulation and ancillary spaces, while allowing the principal living areas to enjoy uninterrupted views of the garden and the wider rural setting.
